Kathy's French Wine Cake
This is such a special cake – close to my heart.
My mentor and friend Mary Sangueniti gave me the recipe when I opened my bakery in 1976. As a gift Mary was the original owner Starlight Bakery in San Mateo. She lived right across the street from her bakery and I lived around the corner on 12th Avenue.
I had six kids and we would go to Starlight Bakery and buy her bread, cookies, St. Honore Cakes and talked to Mary who loved everyone.
When I opened my own bakery in 1976, Mary thought I should have at least one item that I could offer my customers that didn’t have to be pre-ordered. Since all my cakes are made to order, I didn’t have anything to buy while they were in my bakery.
Not only did Mary Sangueniti give me the recipe for Wine Cake, she thought I should have an awning over my front door so people driving on “B” Street would be able to find me. An awning in 1976 was $500.00 and beyond my budget.
Next thing I know, the awning company was installing an awning. The installers told me a “little gray haired lady” paid for the awning with five $100.00 bills.
Mary passed away and I miss her so much – but she lives on with the Wine Cake.
